The History of Delhi.
From the times of the mound builders to the years of modern settlement, this is a recording of historical data that gives Delhi its unique character; a community that many of us still call home.
One could easily argue that Delhi was settled at least 3500 years ago at the time the Poverty Point mounds were being built. The residents of this area buit what has been acknowledged as the largest and most complex geometrical earthwork in North America. There are numerous earthworks or mounds that are found all along the Mississippi delta; in fact, the Marsdon Mound is located just outside the city limits.
Between 1542 and 1682, the Native American population began to be supplanted by the Spanish and French explores. Early Spanish settlers were hunters, exploring the Tensas River and Bayou Macon areas. A few of these true frontiersmen established permanent homes on the banks of these streams. Some of them brought their families into the area.
In 1803, Napoleon decided the Louisiana Territory was of little value to him and sold all of it to the United States. With the Louisiana Purchase, began a rapid westward movement into the lands along the Mississippi. Thus, began the true land ownership of the region. The simple possession of this territory by the United States Government encouraged Americans to move in.
In 1812, Louisiana became the 18th State. A heavy stream of Americans began to pour into all parts of Louisiana. But not so much in Northeast Louisiana; this region was known as back country and the reservoir for the Mississippi floodwaters. It was not until twenty to twenty-five years later that immigrants sought the fertile lands of the delta region for agriculture...true settlement began.
